Back to: 7: Finishing: The Optician’s Edge
Here is a 9-Part series on how to use the lensmeter.
You cannot perform finishing work without fully understanding how to use the lensmeter.
Much more of this in Course 5: Lensmeter, Verification & Optician Craft.
Note: Lensmeters require maintenance just like any other tool. Don’t be surprised if you find a lensmeter that is 15, 20, 30 years old and has never been given a tune-up.
- Bulbs become dim and/or burn out
- Ink pads dry out and become worn
- Ink pens become worn
- Optics become dirty
- Lens retention ring dries out, cracks, falls off
- Gears become dried out and stiff on spectacle table
- Position lock levers don’t work anymore
- Calibration can be off
Most of those things can be fixed by a competent optician with some mechanical skills. Or you can have it sent out, most likely to Marco, for a refurbishment.
If you are new, take your time and be prepared with a plan when you approach management/owner about the need for a lensmeter refurbishment.
